Dog-Friendly Walks in Auckland

Auckland has lots of great dog-friendly walks. When it comes to walking your dog, we all know that is a must, but often we stick to what we know or a park nearby. With longer evenings, it’s the perfect time to check out a dog walk you haven’t been to or skip across town on your day off and explore what Auckland has to offer.

Dog-Friendly Walks: North Auckland

Sanders Dog Lovers Walk & Reserve

Dog walking restrictions Sanders Reserve: there is a dedicated off-leash dog area. Your dog must be on a leash all other times at the reserve.

Sanders Reserve is a 16.5-hectare scenic coastal reserve looking over the Waitematā Harbour. The walking track around the edge is just under 4km, however, there are many other gravel tracks throughout the reserve and a dedicated dog area at the south end of the reserve. A great park to go for a walk and let your dog stretch its legs.

Sanders Reserve is located in Paremoremo on the North Shore, 35 minutes from Auckland CBD and 12 minutes from Albany.

 

Campbells to Rothesay Bay Walk

Dog walking restrictions Rothesay Bay Beach: Each bay and reserve has its own dog rules, with most following the Summer dog restrictions. Your dog must be on-leash on the walkway from Campbells Bay to Rothesay Bay.

There is a coastal path that has been built up from the rocks and runs around the cliff faces from Campbells Bay to Murrays Bay. It's best to walk at mid to low tide, as the water reaches the path and can become dangerous, especially with strong wind or waves. If you'd like to let your dog have some off-leash time, the beaches allow this before 10 am or after 5 pm during Summer and all times during Winter.

As you reach the North end of Murrays bay, there is a walkway that takes you up and along the top of the cliff to Rothesay Bay. The entire walk from Campbells Bay to Rothesay Bay is 8.5km return and will take you about 1.5 hours. If you prefer to do a shorter walk, park and start the walk at Mairangi Bay or Murrays Bay beach.

Campbells Bay is located 20 minutes from Auckland CBD, and 12 minutes north of Takapuna.

 

Ōrewa / Te Ara Tahuna Estuary Walkway

Dog walking restrictions Ōrewa Estuary: dogs are allowed off-leash on the reserve areas around the estuary, however, they are prohibited on the foreshore. 

The Ōrewa Estuary path is a 7.6km scenic dog-friendly loop. The walkway hugs the water’s edge and is flat making it great for all fitness levels. There is a large car park and another path across the road which follows the estuary and takes you to Orewa beach. 

Orewa Estuary walk is  40 mins from Auckland CBD or 20 minutes north of Albany.

 

Dog-Friendly Walks: West Auckland

Hobsonville Point Coastal Walk

Dog walking restrictions Hobsonville coastal walk: dogs must be on-leash at all times on the walkway.

The Te Ara Manawa / Hobsonville Point walk is a 5.5km loop and takes about 60 minutes to walk. It is mostly off-road and in shared spaces looking out over the Waitematā Harbour. Along the walk, there is a dedicated dog park at Onekiritea Park. The walkway is mostly sealed with some short sections of gravel.

Hobsonville Point loop walk is 25 minutes from Auckland CBD or 10 minutes north of Westgate.


Mercer Bay Loop Walk

Dog walking restrictions Mercer Bay Walk: dogs must be on-leash at all times on the walkway.

Mercer Bay loop is a 2.2km gravel dog-friendly walking track and takes about 40 minutes to walk. It coastal bushwalk high above Piha and takes you to TeAhua headland, an important Māori pā (fortified village) site, with incredible views of Auckland’s west coast.

There is a junction that links to the track that takes you down Comans Track to Karekare Beach. Walking to Karekare Beach and back up will take about further 2 hours. Coming back up is very steep, so be mindful of your fitness level and make sure you bring a bottle of water and some food.

Mercer Bay loop walk is 55 minutes from Auckland CBD or 30 minutes west of Henderson.

 

Karamatura Falls Loop Walk

Dog walking restrictions Karamatura Reserve: dogs must be on-leash at all times.

Karamatura Falls is a dog-friendly walk in the Waitakere Ranges. It is a beautiful bush walk where you will be able to spot some young Kauri, catch a view across the valley at the lookout, and come across an impressive waterfall 15m.

You follow the stream along the Karamatura Loop Walk, passing a bridge and the start of Fletchers Track. After about 30 minutes you, turn onto the Karamatura track until you see a sign for the falls. The main waterfall is 15m. Back on the Karamatura track, there is a steady climb to the lookout. The track is mostly gravel, with some rock hoping. 

The Karamtura Falls loop walk is located just past Huia, 50 minutes from Auckland CBD and 30 minutes west of Avondale.

 

Dog-Friendly Walks: Central Auckland

Ōrākei Basin Loop Walk

Dog walking restrictions Ōrākei Basin Reserve: dogs can be off-leash in the park areas at all times.

Ōrākei Basin is an easy scenic walk around a lagoon located in a volcanic crater. The walk is tidal and made up of a mix of gravel track, stairs, boardwalk, and concrete. The reserve that runs around half of the walk is off-leash all year, so is a great option for your dog to get a run.

The Ōrākei Basin Loop walk is located in Meadowbank, 12 minutes from Auckland CBD.

 

Cornwall Park Loop Walk

Dog walking restrictions One Tree Hill Domain: dogs must be on-leash at all times. 

Cornwall park loop walk takes you around one of the most iconic volcanos, Maungakiekie / One Tree Hill. It is an easy stroll on a mostly sealed path on a working farm. There is a small gravel section and cattle stops. You will pass mature trees, natives and sheep, and cows. 

You can also walk up to the top of the hill for a panorama view of Auckland city, or link onto the Cornwall Park Heritage walk at the roundabout in Cornwall park for a further 5.5km walk through Campbell park (across the Green Lane West).

Cornwall Park loop walk is located 20 minutes from Auckland CBD.

Waterview Walk

Dog walking restrictions Alan Wood Reserve: dogs can be off-leash on the reserve at all times, however, are prohibited on the sports field. 

The Waterview walkway starts at Valonia Reserve and follows Oakley Creek (Te Auaunga) until you get to Oakley Creek Esplanade Reserve. Many opt for a shorter walk by only doing a section of the walk. The path is sealed and mostly off-road and in shared spaces. It is a popular cycleway too, so be mindful of this when walking your dog. 

The path continues on both ends, linking to Oakley Creek Path (4.5km) at the north end and Te Auaunga / Wesley Path (7.5km) at the south end.  

Waterview walk is located 15 minutes from Auckland CBD.

 

Dog-Friendly Walks: East Auckland

Mangemangeroa Kōwhai Walk

The walkway runs along the Mangemangeroa Stream, through native bush and farmland. It is a return trip either from Hayley Lane or Somerville Road. A beautiful scenic walk, with stunning views of Beachlands as you reach Somerville Road. 

At Somerville end, the path links onto Shelly Park Beach Path (5km) and the Mangemangeroa Rotary Loop Path (1km).

The Mangemangeroa Kōwhai walk is located just past Huia, 35 minutes from Auckland CBD and 10 minutes from East Tāmaki.

 

Whitford Walk (Wades walkway)

The Whitford Walk is a gravel 3.6km track that runs along the Tūranga Creek. You’ll walk through Whitford Village Green, past the lookout to the mangroves, and along the creek. Close by is the village for a coffee stop and sufficient parking. 

The Mangemangeroa Kōwhai walk is located just past Huia, 40 minutes from Auckland CBD, or 15 minutes east of Ōtara.

 

Ōmana Perimeter Walk

Dog walking restrictions Ōmana park: dogs can be off-leash at the regional park at all times, except on or near the playground.

The Ōmana Perimeter walk is a relatively easy walk around the edge of the Ōmana regional park and is a great place to take your dog for a walk in East Auckland. The track is a mixture of gravel, sealed and boardwalks through native bush and open fields. At the top, you’ll have an amazing view out to Waiheke Island. The park is signposted well, but be mindful dogs are prohibited from the short farm walking track. If you’d like to go for a longer walk with your dog or make a day out of it, Ōmana  Beach is 1km away. 

The Ōmana Perimeter park is located in Maraetai, 45 minutes from Auckland CBD, or 25 minutes east of Ōtara.

 

Dog-Friendly Walks: South Auckland

Tōtara Puhinui Creek Walk

Dog walking restrictions Tōtara Park: dogs can be off-leash at the park at all times, however, they need to be on-leash on the walking track, near the picnic area or near the playground.

The path is along the fringe of the Tōtara forest following the Puhinui Creek to the off-leash dog area at the end is large and great to let your dog stretch their legs. The park is scenic and a popular option for taking your dog for a walk. The gravel track takes you through native bush and you’ll see and hear lots of native birds. There are other tracks you can follow that will take you up to the lookout that overlooks the Manukau Harbour.

The Tōtara Puhinui Creek walk is located next to the Botanical Gardens, 25 minutes from Auckland CBD.

Wattle Downs South Walk

Hadley Wood Drive, Wattle Downs, Auckland

Distance: 3km return  |  Time: 35 minutes  |  Difficulty: easy

Dog walking restrictions Moko-kauri / Kauri Point Reserve:  dogs can be off-leash at the park at all times, however, they need to be on-leash on the walking track.

The entire Wattle Downs South walk is a total of 8km from 53 Hadley Wood Drive to 27 Frangipani Avenue. To keep it a short 3km return walk, start from Hadley Wood Drive and walk to Moko-kauri / Kauri Point Reserve where the dog can be off-leash.

The walk is paved and a nice easy coastal track with scenic views out to the Manukau Harbour so is best at high tide.

The Wattle Downs South walk is located 30 minutes from Auckland CBD.

 

Māngere Mountain Walk

Dog walking restrictions Māngere Domain: dogs can be off-leash at the park at all times, however, they need to be on-leash on the walking track or near the playground.

The Māngere Mountain /  Te Pane o Mataoho dog-friendly walk is up to one of Auckland’s volcanic cones, above the Manukau Harbour. It is important you keep to the tracks as the mountain is an important historic Māori pā (fortified village settlement) site. A steady climb up, where you will see evidence of extensive māra kai (food gardens) and pā storage pits, and then you’ll be rewarded with beautiful 360 views across Auckland city at the top.

Māngere Mountain /  Te Pane o Mataoho is located in  Māngere Bridge, 20 minutes from Auckland CBD.

 

What to take when walking your dog

Be prepared when going for a walk with your dog. No one likes to figure out a way to scoop their poop with a shell or leave!

Make a special bag that you can take out when you take your dog for walks or down to the lohcal beac and make a habit of repacking it when you get home, so it is ready for your next trip. 

What to bring when walking your dog: 

  1. ID tag with their name and your contact number
  2. Some Poo bags 
  3. A dog leash and a dog collar or harness
  4. Some water
  5. A portable dog water bowl or bottle to drink from
  6. Some dog treats
  7. Your dog's favourite fetch toy 
  8. Apply dog sunblock before your walk
